It seems I'm on a roll here with the GNOME issues.. And I hear what you're thinking, "Why doesn't he just use KDE and/or Compiz or Cairo-Dock?" I've tried them, and I cannot tell you how much more annoyed I was by their all out frivolous nature. While aesthetic, some of the complaints I'm making about GNOME truly inhibit its function. A GUI should be as pleasant to look at as it is useful.

Another example of the half-baked state of GNOME is it's standard Workspace Switcher. Workspaces are great, and really offer untold efficiency, once you weave them into your work-flow.
The trend in the GUI these days, and for some time now, has been transparency. You know, making windows or parts of them see-through. I see transparency overused frequently, by people who must have much better eyesight than I. I do however, enjoy using a tiny bit of transparency to brighten up the my dull desktop.

Unfortunately, certain parts of the standard GNOME applet set (I'm in Fedora 12, here) have not yet gained the transparency options already present in gnome-panel, most of its applets, and gnome-terminal. I'm not looking for the apps boxes in the workspaces to be see-through. I only want to see options in the Preferences menu to give me the choice to omit the depressing grey backgrounds at the lower right of my screen.

Certainly, I 'm not the only one who thinks the following is an improvement... Let me know (complain below)...

Here's my imagined future state (that clock applet is also digitized failure):
Alright... on to my next complaint...

If I recall (and it's not worth looking up), Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (or maybe even 95) was the first one to include the "Taskbar" with its "Quick Lanch" buttons... I love these things. What better way to keep my desktop clean, while putting me one (or more) click(s)/keystroke(s) closer to completing my next task.

Here's the trouble: On GNOME, for as long as I can remember, and even on my fully yum-updated Fedora 12 box, I can only have a single horizontal row of "application launchers" and tray icons (though that's another blog waiting to happen), PER PANEL. Unfortunately, I DON'T WANT TWO PANELS, I want one.. Why, you say? If I have two panels, instead of one, my "Window List" applet cannot span both, forcing me into an inefficient use of precious screenscape.

Here's something I'd like to clarify... I understand that Linux is participatory, and that I should probably just learn how to code better. Yes, I could jump in and fix it myself. I submit that the complainer is equally important, in their own right, to the person who fixes the problems. If the programmer doesn't know what to fix, when will they just remarkably wake up with the knowledge that something needs fixing? That is why this blog exists.

I digress.. As the Saturday Night Live saying goes, "FIX IT!"... peep the half-way mark in the vid below..
I'm really finicky... in that I like things to work as I'd expect them to work.. You probably are too, but you've no idea what to do about it... Here's an idea... COMPLAIN!

Case in point, when I'm doing the right thing and reading the manual (yeah, yeah, I know) and I switch from the scroll-wheel to the cursor keys to move through it (because my index finger has gone numb), I expect to scroll down from where I am on the page.

I do NOT however expect to be transported to the top of the document, nor do I expect for a cursor bar to appear and begin lolly-gagging its way down the doc.

I see no reason for a cursor to appear at all. A help "book" being a read-only document (from the F1 key [or whatever]), don't give me a cursor; that suggests I am being prompted to type -- AND I'M NOT!

Here's a thought... Make it work like a web browser (no, not lynx!)....
